Group Material war ein Künstler- und Kuratorenkollektiv aus New York, das sich Ende der 70er Jahre formierte und Projekte organisierte, die der sozialen Kommunikation und dem politischen Wandel gewidmet waren. 1980 wurden im Rahmen der Ausstellung „The People’s Choice – Arroz con Mango“ Objekte gezeigt, welche die Nachbarn ihres Kunstraums zur Verfügung stellten – alles von Hochzeitsfotos bis hin zu Süssigkeitsautomaten. 1989-1991 fand die Ausstellung „AIDS Timeline“ statt mit vielfältigen Kunstwerk rund um das Thema der AIDS Epidemie.
